This is an INCREDIBLE opportunity to increase accessibility to hearing healthcare, which is urgently needed.
The World Health Organization estimates 1 in 5 people will have hearing loss by 2050, and this is largely due to the aging population. They advocate that access to hearing healthcare will be essential in coming years.
Who could benefit?
Someone who has perceived mild to moderate hearing impairment over 18 years of age.
What are the pros?
These are essentially “reader glasses” for early signs of hearing loss, and for people with these early indications they might be a great fit. Getting access to sound again is healthy and important for the brain in the aging process, and the sooner the intervention, the better.
For the right person, with the right needs, this might be a good fit and affordable alternative than purchasing a traditional hearing aid.
What are the cons?
We often loose our hearing slowly with time, and do not realize how much we are missing until we have a hearing test. Someone may be using this device when they truly need a more specialized product.
These devices are not the most affordable direct-to-consumer product out there, and they also have some surprising limitations. For example, they do not stream sound from a smart phone, and you must have a smart phone to program them. There are other products on the market that might be a better fit for someone if they knew all their options. For example, there are already PSAPS (personal sound amplifiers) that work without a smart phone, and even more that stream directly phone calls.
Our Concern:
Without a diagnostic hearing test, critical factors in someone’s hearing loss (such as the type, severity, functional implications) can be missed. Further, it is costly enough that if it is the wrong product and cannot be returned, finances could be wasted that could be used elsewhere.
There are also critical “red flag” factors considered in a hearing test to determine if it is simply age related or possibly related to middle or inner-ear disorders, such as an acoustic neuroma or otosclerosis. When patients do not have their ears evaluated, they may be improving their hearing loss intervention but delaying their medical intervention.
We recommend those interested in the Bose Sound Control first obtain a diagnostic hearing evaluation by an Audiologist to become educated on their specific hearing loss etiology and empowered to make a more informed decision regarding the plentiful options of hearing widgets on the market.
